Welcome to the Zaagkuilsdrift
Bird Sanctuary and Lodge!

My story might be a bit long to read, but just like a student in art class cannot hand in an uncoloured mosaic, our experience at Zaagkuilsdrift is most definitely worth colouring! Last year December, I was looking for a place for our family to get away from the every day hustle, and came across Zaagkuilsdrift's website.  We were desperate to get away for a day or two.  We needed to find a place where we could relax and just find ourselves again.  Due to the fact that we are all nature lovers, somewhere in the bush was definitely first prize.  We decided to book at Zaagkuilsdrift for two nights.

Upon arrival, Gerrie came to the car to great us and immediately had the staff offload our luggage. (We had a lot!!!) We were treated to a welcome drink while all of the staff treated us like royalty.

Our rooms were beautifully decorated and we felt straight at home.

After unpacking, we went to the pool for the kids to swim.  Our disabled daughter, 23 months old at the time, was enjoying the lovely pool with her brother and sister and Gerrie came to ask if he could prepare a special meal for her.  We were gobsmacked! How polite of him to ask!  Definitely felt like royalty!!  Well, needless to say, Amore immediately fell in love with this uncle who cared about her so much!!

Gerrie and Jaco would babysit for us so we could eat (once again way more than we expected!!) and when we got to our room, they had carried a special bath into the room for her to bath.  They even accommodated her on the game drives!  It felt like we were visiting family!

We decided to extend our stay and invited friends over as well.

The staff at the bird sanctuary also made an extra effort to make it enjoyable for all.  It was a holiday we would never forget and better yet, we never wanted to leave.  We, including my stress-ball husband, had never relaxed more on any holiday!

The effort put into the food, the staff, the décor, the state of the bird sanctuary and the beautiful rooms are definitely something we long to return to. They add that pinch of salt to the stew, I would say, they definitely have the recipe just right.  If you are in need of rest, peace, nature, tranquility, awesome food and family, there is no better place in the world!!

Zaagkuildrift Lodge is ideally located for birders who want to visit the excellent and well know birding areas Kgomo-Kgomo and the Zaagkuildift road. In addition the property itself hosts numerous bird species. The property borders the Pienaars River and it also contains a large floodplain which in wet years can produce some unusual birds. The accommodation is excellent and the staff super helpful.

Of all of the places I have stayed all over the world, Zaagkuilsdrift is by far one of my favourite places.  Close to nature and as a bird photographer and nature lover, I can relax and enjoy nature in a way that is difficult to explain.

The lodge offers fantastic value for money and the hospitality of Gerrie and Jaco Botha who are the owners, are beyond any description.... not to mention the food.  An absolute gem in the bushveld, and really not that far from Johannesburg or Pretoria.   An absolutely great place to unwind and relax.

Zaagkuilsdrift is another unknown gem hiding north of Pretoria.
It is about 40 minutes north of Pretoria and 70 minutes from Johannesburg.
It must rank as one of the best birding sites in South Africa, and Zaagkullsdrift lodge is in the middle of this area.
A luxurious lodge nestling amongst the birdlife offers the visitors everything you want for a weekend breakaway.
The food is out of this world, and the owners are really accommodating to adapt to let the birders get out and catch the birdlife during the ‘Golden Hours’
There is also a wonderful bird rehabilitation center with guided tours, and a bird hide that is on the site.
Bungalows are clean and spacious, all opening up onto a center grass space, so any young kids can play around within view.
Once you have been there you want to go back, for longer.
